In this onsite Underwriter II position with Ponce Bank in the Bronx, you will evaluate and underwrite commercial real estate and construction loan applications, conduct risk assessments, prepare credit proposals, and monitor portfolio health. This role supports prudent lending and regulatory compliance within the bank’s real estate finance team.
Responsibilities
- Underwrite and evaluate commercial real estate and construction loan applications.
- Verify accuracy and consistency of all financial information and documentation; ensure loan files contain required application forms; validate regulatory disclosures provided by the processor.
- Identify, review, and analyze relevant information to assess credit risk; determine profitability, strength of guarantor or borrower, and sources of repayment.
- Disseminate financial information as part of the credit application process.
- Review third party vendor reports while communicating with the respective parties to resolve discrepancies.
- Prepare credit proposals on financial standing and present to the loan committee and/or Board of Directors for approval or denial; document reasons for policy exception recommendations, if any.
- Monitor the existing portfolio, including annual credit reviews, renewal of lines of credit, and compliance with covenants.
- Ensure adherence to bank policies and procedures and federal and state regulatory requirements.
- Provide cross-functional support to other areas of the department and the Bank where service or assistance is needed.
- Perform tasks supportive of the essential functions of the job, with adjustments possible depending on circumstances.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in business, economics, accounting, finance, real estate development or related field; specialized mortgage loan underwriting education/training.
- Minimum of five (5) years’ underwriting experience in commercial, construction, and owner-occupied mortgage loans with loan sizes over $5 million.
- Construction experience strongly preferred.
- Clearly communicates in English; proficient reading, writing, grammar, and mathematics.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficient knowledge of underwriting practices.
- Moderate PC skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.

A minimum of five (5) years’ underwriting experience in commercial, construction, and owner-occupied mortgage loans with loan sizes exceeding $5 million; construction experience strongly preferred.
Salary Range
Salary: $92,280 - $107,650 per year
