Sr. Commercial Underwriter
Job Description
The Senior Commercial Underwriter evaluates borrower creditworthiness and the structure of credit facilities to prepare the underwriting portion of loan presentations for approval. This role involves identifying strengths, weaknesses, and trends; offering recommendations; spreading financial statements; assessing risk; providing underwriting statistics; and staying current with regulatory compliance and economic conditions as they relate to commercial lending. The role handles underwriting for the most complex borrowing relationships, requires independent judgment and decision-making with minimal direction, and includes mentoring newer underwriting staff. Additionally, the position advocates for the bank and its lending services within the community, helping to identify and fulfill local financial needs by participating in community activities. This role is a key contributor on the Commercial Banking Relationship Team, working directly with Bankers, Credit Officers, and other Underwriters to analyze new and existing commercial credit opportunities and support loan portfolio management. The successful candidate may attend client and prospect meetings and conduct research to identify, quantify, and mitigate underwriting risk inherent in the borrower, industry, or loan structure, while developing strong working relationships with client management, internal teammates, credit officers, and other bankers. Senior Underwriters are also expected to provide mentorship to junior staff, including Credit Analysts and newer Junior Commercial Credit Underwriters.
