Overview
This Commercial Credit Lead role is a client facing, individual contributor position based in a hybrid remote setting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The role combines thorough financial statement analysis, structuring credit solutions, negotiating legal documents, and securing credit approvals while ensuring adherence to credit policies and regulatory requirements. The role also involves leading a transaction team and collaborating with relationship managers, risk officers, and other stakeholders to support sound credit decisions and sustain portfolio quality.
Primary Responsibilities
- Underwrite new credit requests and material deal modifications from initial screen through approval and for the life of the loan, advising on conditions as appropriate.
- Oversee ongoing credit risk in existing portfolios via continuous credit monitoring to identify emerging risk, take actions to manage risk, minimize losses, and assign accurate risk ratings.
- Review all pertinent credit and financial information, including financial statements, tax returns, due diligence reports, credit bureau data, appraisals, internal credit information, industry research and peer data; determine if further investigation is needed and coordinate data gathering.
- Analyze financial information and related materials, producing credit analyses that include an independent credit quality assessment with well supported risk ratings, identification of risks and mitigants, industry concerns, market and financial trends, and other relevant credit issues.
- Make appropriate structure recommendations based on scenario analysis, including the company’s base case and downside case.
- As part of ongoing risk management, identify suspicious activity or actions that may not align with the customer’s interests.
- Collaborate proactively with relationship managers and stay engaged from deal screen through approval and for the life of the loan to maintain timely and accurate risk ratings for a portfolio of commercial credits.
- Spread financial statements and develop financial models to sensitize various conditions affecting the proposed transaction.
- Prepare cash flow analyses, collateral schedules, covenant sensitivity calculations, financial models, and guarantor statement analyses as appropriate.
- Participate in client or prospect calls with RMs to gain a thorough understanding of the client and their business for effective underwriting of the proposed transaction; based on underwriting parameters, determine the risk rating.
- Prepare summaries, present facts, and provide opinions on creditworthiness.
- Propose loan structures, including terms, conditions, collateral, and guarantors when appropriate.
- Display a solid understanding of the financial regulatory environment as it applies to underwriting most commercial credit transactions.
- Ensure compliance with credit policy by verifying underwriting adherence to the Commercial Credit Policy and evaluating risks associated with non compliance.
- Present analyses or address questions during credit request discussions or committee presentations.
- Understand and follow the company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in line with the risk appetite, escalating risk related issues to management as needed.

- Maintain internal control standards and timely implementation of audit and regulator recommendations as applicable.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Scope of Responsibilities
The Corporate and Institutional designation encompasses segments such as FIG, Fund Banking, Institutional/REIT, Large Corporate, and Leveraged Lending. The Commercial Credit team manages the credit delivery for the bank’s commercial clients, handling assessments from initial evaluations of new relationships to changes or restructurings and ongoing monitoring through the life of the loan. The team also ensures accurate completion of risk rating scorecards and financial statement spreads used to support decisions on new, renewed, or amended credit transactions. Interaction with commercial banking RMs and sales leadership across the bank, as well as other internal teams, occurs for approvals on large, complex, or specialized loans. Direct client interaction is expected. The role operates with minimal supervision and can effectively lead the transaction execution team, which may include an Associate and/or an Analyst.
Supervisory and Managerial Responsibilities
Contribute to the development and training of junior analysts and associates.
Education and Experience Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, plus seven years of experience in complex credit underwriting, specialty underwriting, or other advanced financial analysis roles.
- Alternatively, a combined minimum 11 years of higher education and work experience, including seven years in complex credit underwriting or related fields, may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Strong analytical skills with advanced financial modeling and analysis of credit transactions and structures.
- Ability to calculate and interpret financial ratios, analyze data, and perform trend analysis to understand and mitigate credit risk.
- Proficiency with legal documentation and the ability to negotiate and structure transactions independently.

Compensation
M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive and market informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this role is $139,700.00 - $232,900.00 annually (USD). The specific compensation offered will reflect the candidate’s knowledge, skills, and experience.
