Responsibilities
- Oversee and grow HSB's portfolio offerings for the company's largest and most strategic client relationships, with a focus on driving profitability and growth.
- Act as a catalyst for introducing new products and monitor the performance of existing client accounts.
- Serve as a client thought leader, crafting innovative solutions by leveraging HSB's data, products, and services to strengthen partnerships.
- Collaborate with Product Managers and the Underwriting Lead to apply diagnostic and predictive analytics that illuminate product performance and guide corrective actions, rate adequacy, price segmentation, and loss trend detection; review claims, engineering reports, expenses, exposure data and profile shifts, pure premium trends, and third-party data.
- Develop and deliver externally facing client presentations that communicate financial results, data analyses, rate assessments, and evolving loss trends, establishing the Senior Portfolio Underwriter as the technical authority for clients and the Client Integration Team.
- With binding authority, make underwriting decisions that directly influence the financial results and P&L of the assigned portfolio.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required.
- 7+ years of property and casualty insurance or reinsurance experience required; 5+ years in underwriting preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of commercial and personal lines insurance and reinsurance coverage, concepts, exposures, and processes to drive profitable results.
- Ability to translate large data analyses into actionable decisions.
- Understanding of rate development (pure premium), price segmentation, and detecting leading loss trends.
- Past experience with responsibility for achieving profit and growth targets for a book of business.
- Demonstrated experience with negotiation and conflict resolution.
- Exhibited ability to develop creative and unique solutions.
- HSB product knowledge and previous familiarity with HSB is desired.
Knowledge and Skills
- Financial statement (business finance) knowledge and analysis.
- General insurance/reinsurance industry knowledge.
- Presentation skills and strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication abilities.
- Portfolio analysis and HSB product knowledge.
- Organizational and time management capabilities.
- Consultative and strategic negotiation skills; strong project management to handle multiple concurrent projects.
- PC skills including Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI, and Word; detail oriented and action oriented.
- Actuarial skills, statistical analysis, innovation, and the ability to persuade to influence change.
- Curiosity and resourcefulness to identify issues, research, and propose underwriting solutions.
