Role purpose
Lead a team of Personal Lines Residential, Recreational, and/or Commercial Physical Damage Underwriters to deliver underwriting quality that aligns with profitable growth goals, provide a positive underwriting experience through timely production and service levels that meet partner and policyholder expectations, act as a growth partner by fostering collaboration with American Modern Sales Partners, internal stakeholders, and external sales partners, and develop team members to achieve their career goals.
Key responsibilities
- Develop associates to ensure a blend of logic, expertise, analysis, experience, judgment, and underwriting methods are consistently used for sound, compliant, and timely underwriting decisions.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with internal stakeholders, including the Underwriting Leadership team, Sales, Product, Corporate Underwriting, and Customer Service, as well as the Munich Re parent companies, to promote clear communication, efficient processes, and teamwork.
- Foster relationships with external Sales Partners to provide insights on their book of business and achieve profit targets through portfolio-based and individual risk underwriting techniques.
- Maintain deep product and underwriting expertise within the department to meet responsibilities and financial targets.
- Lead a diverse team to achieve key performance indicators, service level targets, and a positive customer experience as measured by non-catastrophe loss ratio, quality controls, new business turnaround times, and Net Promoter Scores.
- Create a positive culture that emphasizes development, accountability, excellence, and team building through ongoing dialogue, driving higher employee engagement and results.
- Use data and analytics to manage production, monitor performance, and drive efficiency improvements.
- Identify and implement process improvements and workflow efficiency initiatives.
- Support a culture of compliance through systems, audits, and training programs.
- Ensure adherence to risk management policies and procedures.
- Oversee high level administrative functions within the department, including staff performance management, forecasting staffing needs, and designing training programs for strategic growth.
Additional manager responsibilities
- Analyze market and financial data to inform underwriting decisions while ensuring risk is mitigated and standards are met.
- Provide feedback when concerns arise with Product, Sales, or sales partners and address issues promptly.
- Represent Underwriting to internal stakeholders and key Sales Partners, fostering a collaborative and profitable relationship.
- Develop and lead successful teams and culture, attracting and retaining top talent.

Experience and education
- Required: 5+ years of underwriting experience
- Required: 2+ years supervising exempt associates, teams, or processes, preferably in underwriting with both tactical and strategic responsibilities
Education and designations
- Required: Bachelor’s Degree, Supervisor’s certification, CPCU or other industry designation/coursework
- Preferred: Advanced degree
