Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and commercially minded Product Manager to lead the development and expansion of the small commercial insurance portfolio. This role is pivotal in driving growth for a well established carrier that is investing in a competitive and scalable commercial insurance platform. The ideal candidate blends strong small commercial underwriting expertise with a producer mindset, understanding how to structure, package, and position products to win in the market while maintaining underwriting discipline. The role will emphasize core offerings such as General Liability, Professional Liability, and Business Owners Policy. Familiarity with integrating coverages into product offerings is important from a distribution standpoint. Location for this role is Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey.
Key Responsibilities
- Product Strategy, Design and Development: Lead the design, development, and enhancement of small commercial products including General Liability, Professional Liability, Businessowners Policy, Fiduciary Liability, Cyber Liability, Employment Practices Liability Insurance, Directors and Officers / Management Liability, Commercial Crime, Commercial Surety Bonds, and ERISA Fidelity Bonds.
- Develop bundled and packaged solutions that combine multiple coverages (including bonds where appropriate) to create differentiated offerings for target segments.
- Identify underserved market segments and craft tailored solutions to drive growth.
- Bundling and Packaging Innovation: Build scalable, repeatable coverage and support product launches with clear appetite, positioning, and underwriting guidelines.
- Partner with agents, brokers, and program administrators to drive adoption.
- Bring a producer mindset by balancing risk selection with growth, retention, and distribution success.
- Portfolio and Performance Management: Monitor product performance including premium growth, loss ratios, and mix of business; identify trends and recommend adjustments to enhance profitability and competitiveness; continuously refine offerings based on market feedback and performance data.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with senior leadership; bridge technical product development and market-facing teams; engage directly with brokers, partners, and occasionally policyholders to inform product direction as necessary; support and advise in-house producers in marketing bundled packages to our existing customer base.
Required Qualifications (Must-Haves)
- Five or more years of small commercial underwriting experience with a carrier or MGA.
- Direct experience in designing and developing small commercial insurance products.
- Strong expertise in one or more areas such as Professional Liability, General Liability, Businessowners Policy, Fidelity Liability, Cyber, EPLI, Commercial Crime, Directors & Officers, and familiarity with other company products.
- In-depth understanding of insurance forms, endorsements, and coverage construction.
- Proven ability to translate underwriting insights into marketable, scalable products.
- Experience working in cross-functional environments to bring products to market.
- Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Haves)
- Experience building or contributing to bundled or packaged insurance solutions.
- Familiarity with incorporating bonds into product offerings from a product and distribution perspective.
- Demonstrated proactive and entrepreneurial mindset with a bias toward execution.
- Strong communication skills for working with agents, brokers, and policyholders.
- Experience in a growth-oriented or transforming organization.
