Strategic Risk Manager

Overview

We are seeking a Strategic Risk Oversight Manager to join the Strategic Risk team. This high visibility role provides independent oversight, review, and challenge of strategic risks arising from competition, the external environment, or the company’s strategic choices and execution. The Strategic Risk Oversight Manager ensures strategic risks are proactively identified, properly assessed, and effectively managed in alignment with the company’s risk appetite and long-term strategic goals.

What you will do

• Strategic risk identification: Collaborate with divisional leaders, Corporate Strategy, and Risk Management to identify and evaluate strategic risks that could affect the achievement of the company s strategy or arise from pursuing it.
• Effective challenge: Oversee risk identification and related assessments to ensure divisions consider risks from market trends, shifts in the competitive landscape, and the company s strategic decisions and execution; provide expert guidance on quantifying and qualitatively assessing strategic risks on the business model or financial performance.
• Assessment: Evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of divisions risk controls and mitigation actions, ensuring timeliness and appropriateness to mitigate key failure modes.
• Governance: Enhance governance of strategic risk by refining policies, routines, and interaction models.
• Advisory: Serve as a trusted advisor to Business Risk Offices and other stakeholders on the strategic risk implications of internal strategic choices and external trends.
• Reporting: Prepare regular updates to executive management and the Board Risk Committee on changes to the company s strategic risk profile.
• Teamwork: Partner with stakeholders at all levels across the company to manage, inform, and influence outcomes.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or military experience
• At least 5 years of experience in risk management or financial services consulting

Preferred Qualifications

• Strategy or risk management experience in a large financial services organization or management consultancy
• Experience in the payments industry
• Comprehensive knowledge of the end-to-end risk management lifecycle, risk frameworks, and governance structures
• Proven ability to distill complex information into a clear narrative for executive and board audiences
• Proven ability to identify and evaluate risk pathways and devise management strategies
• Collaborative, team-oriented, with the ability to navigate a complex organization and influence outcomes
• Strong analytical, problem solving, and critical thinking skills

Compensation and Benefits

This position is eligible for performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonuses and long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan. The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. This salary information applies to candidates hired to work in one of these locations and reflects the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based on the agreed upon hours.

• McLean, VA: $151,900 - $173,400 for Risk Manager
• Richmond, VA: $138,100 - $157,700 for Risk Manager
• Riverwoods, IL: $138,100 - $157,700 for Risk Manager
