Position Summary

The Property and Casualty Underwriter is responsible for managing a portfolio of accounts and driving new and renewal business opportunities for Property and Casualty insurance. The role assesses risks related to insuring properties and liabilities, reviews applications, analyzes data, and determines coverage terms and premiums to support sound underwriting decisions. They establish and maintain underwriting practices and guidelines within delegated authority and cultivate relationships with brokers and other stakeholders in the assigned portfolio.

What will your job entail?

  • Underwrites new and renewal property and casualty business, reviews policy forms, broker endorsement requests, and submitted documentation in line with company underwriting standards and guidelines, obtaining additional information as needed.
  • Decides whether to accept, modify, or decline a risk by evaluating coverage value, location, usage, safety features, and other pertinent factors.
  • Determines appropriate coverage limits, premiums, and policy terms based on risk assessment and underwriting guidelines, while ensuring active portfolio management of property and casualty accounts.
  • Delivers services for new property and casualty business and renewals with professionalism, technical proficiency, and adherence to underwriting guidelines.
  • Examines, identifies, and evaluates exposures and ensures compliance with state and country laws and guidelines established by carriers and the organization.
  • Provides premium forecasts and business plans to support budget and performance targets.
  • Maintains existing broker relationships and collaborates across teams to manage submissions, quotes, declines, binds, and issuances to deliver accurate, timely, and high-quality service to clients.
  • Builds professional, long-term relationships within the designated portfolio and within delegated authority limits, partnering with brokers to create customized insurance solutions as needed to service clients.
  • Creates opportunities for new business, maximizes retention of the assigned portfolio, and ensures timely renewal reviews to meet business targets.
  • Executes marketing activities, attends seminars and training, and stays informed on market dynamics and property and casualty underwriting trends.
  • Keeps informed about industry trends, emerging risks in the property and casualty sector, terminology, and regulations, and adjusts underwriting strategies accordingly.

Work Experience and Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Risk Management, Actuarial Science, or Business Administration required. Other related disciplines or commensurate work experience will be considered.
  • 5+ years of experience in Property and Casualty Underwriting.
  • Licenses & Certifications: Must meet minimum requirements for state P&C and/or surplus line licenses. Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) is a plus.

Compensation

The target salary range for this position is $96,000.00 - $120,000.00 annually. The wage range for this role reflects factors such as training, transferable skills, work experience, licensure and certification, business needs, and market demands. The pay range may change and be modified in the future. Full-time roles are eligible for bonuses and benefits.
