Job title: Mortgage Underwriter. Department: Mortgage Lending. Location: Honolulu, HI 96826. FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt. Reports to: Mortgage Lending Manager.

Position Purpose

This role involves reviewing, analyzing, approving, and underwriting complex individual consumer requests and products in line with company and industry guidelines. Responsibilities include evaluating financial statements, credit reports, and ratios such as debt-to-income and loan-to-value; verifying transactions for accuracy and completeness; preparing formal reports for review; ensuring documentation aligns with guidelines; applying fraud detection techniques and performing compliance reviews; assisting with loan restructures according to lending guidelines; acting as a technical resource and providing guidance to junior underwriting and processing staff, including mentoring on credit decisioning and policies; delivering technical training to promote consistency. The position may also support the processing and closing of residential mortgages at all stages to ensure compliance. May serve as a team lead and provide performance feedback to less senior staff and may back up the Supervisor in their absence.

Essential Functions

  • Evaluate loans in accordance with quality control, internal, and agency guidelines
  • Ensure the accuracy of all information in loan files to meet quality control standards and investor guidelines
  • Verify compliance with all regulatory policies and procedures
  • Recommend procedural improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness
  • Perform other duties as required

Performance Standards

  • Deliver excellent member service both internally and externally
  • Assist the department in achieving annual loan production targets
  • Stay current on credit union and secondary market policies, procedures, and services
  • Process loans accurately and in a timely manner
  • Ensure executed documents comply with all lending policies

Qualifications

  • Education/Certification: High school diploma or GED required. Business school, associate degree, or equivalent is a plus.
  • Required Knowledge: Basic MS Office skills; solid understanding of lending regulations; strong knowledge of processing and underwriting procedures; familiarity with Hawaii real property laws and regulations such as land court, Ohana dwellings, ADU’s, lava zones, and various leasehold properties; proficient income analysis including complex variable income, self-employed, retirement, seasonal, REO; general understanding of condo projects and agency guidelines for both new and existing properties.
  • Experience Required: Recent direct underwriting experience (3+ years) in Mortgage Loan Operations, including processing and closing conventional first mortgage loans under Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and other secondary market guidelines; experience underwriting loans with mortgage insurance; delegated authority experience is a plus; familiarity with first-time homebuyer programs and down payment assistance, and affordable housing programs offered by federal and state/local agencies such as HHFDC, HHOC, and City and County of Honolulu; expertise with Loan Origination Systems (LOS) and Automated Underwriting Systems (DU/LP).
  • Skills/Abilities: Excellent verbal and written communication; strong analytical, creative, and problem-solving abilities; ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines; ability to work independently and make sound decisions; ability to handle stressful situations; ability to manually calculate DTI/LTV outside of the LOS.
  • Other Desired Skills: Experience evaluating files for Post-Close QC audits; experience with new project developments; experience leading individuals in a production environment; experience with government underwriting including FHA, VA, USDA; experience underwriting brokered loans through a wholesale channel.
