We are seeking a Life Insurance Underwriter who will assess and classify risk for life insurance applications. The role involves evaluating medical history or physical condition, occupational hazards, financial background, insurable interest, and other pertinent information to decide on approval, modification, or denial. The underwriter will interact with the field sales team, customers, and vendors to gather necessary data and has authority to approve cases up to defined standard and substandard limits. Note: Mortgage underwriting experience will NOT be considered. The typical call volume is about 4–6 calls per day, with regular late-night work one day every other week and rotating Friday night late shifts about once per quarter.

What you’ll do

  • Evaluate and make acceptance or denial decisions for assigned life applications with face amounts up to $1,000,000 that are fully underwritten.
  • Ensure the collection of all information required for underwriting, including re-examinations, special exams, medical reports, database research, investigations, and laboratory studies.
  • Interpret MIB codes and generate data and reports for the Medical Information Bureau, requiring knowledge of MIB code meanings and procedures.
  • Provide support for contract changes and reinstatement underwriting as needed.
  • Develop training materials or presentations for underwriters or sales agents to support knowledge and performance.

Qualifications

  • 2-year college degree in Finance, Business, or Economics.
  • 1–2 years of Life Insurance industry experience (sales or strong life insurance sales support/training) required.
  • Knowledge of life and annuity sales highly preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with a focus on customer service.
  • Comfort with technology related to insurance system applications and data; effective in a collaborative team environment.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and results-driven with the ability to work extended hours and weekends if required.
  • Independent thinker with creativity and initiative to pursue new opportunities; excellent organizational and follow-up abilities.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced setting and operate as a team player.
  • Willingness to contribute as a team member, maintain high standards, and drive outcomes.

Work Schedule & Environment

  • Regular call activity averages 4–6 interactions per day with sales or clients.
  • Shifts may include extended hours and occasional weekend work as required.

Physical & Working Requirements

While performing duties, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, as well as talk, hear, and concentrate. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
