Job Summary

This individual contributor role serves as a financial and operational advisor for a portfolio of medical center administrative, ancillary, inpatient, primary and specialty care departments under the guidance of more senior staff. You will deliver operational and financial reporting, analysis, and consultative support aligned with organizational strategic goals, assist with resource allocation through business case development, and partner with clinical leadership to drive operational excellence through data interpretation, validation, and informed decision making. The position requires a solid understanding of health care operations and the integrated health care model at the clinical level, including interpreting large and complex data sets such as medical records and financials. You will supply detailed operational data to evaluate performance improvement initiatives; perform statistical analyses using tools like SAS or SQL to inform decisions; conduct research and prepare detailed business cases with department leaders. Additionally, you will apply broad operational knowledge to assess department operations and workflows, identify opportunities to optimize appointment supply and demand, apply data modeling to financial and non-financial scenarios, and develop and maintain sophisticated staffing models for department and medical center operations.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Evaluate the business environment by conducting financial assessments such as SWOT, scenario planning, opportunity-based strategic planning, and system value chain analysis; generate reports summarizing business, financial, or economic data.
  • Perform costing activities by identifying cost avoidance and cost recovery opportunities.
  • Support improving financial performance by identifying financial trends, leveraging analysis results, and addressing operational issues with the business to enhance performance.
  • Assist with business modeling by developing best-practice models, analyzing risk alternatives, and creating what-if scenarios and forecasts using in-house models or software.
  • Support reporting of regional or business unit financial information by evaluating financial trends, data analysis reports, and forecasts of income and expenses; review assets, liabilities, revenues, and expenses; utilize data inputs from regional systems to support analyses (e.g., membership and utilization reports, volume reporting, day sales inventory, analysis spreadsheets, investment schedules).
  • Assist in assessing the business vision, objectives, and strategic initiatives by researching the financial impact of strategies and initiatives.
  • Create budgets and/or forecasts under guidance by analyzing budgeting trends, preparing budgets and forecasting, and coordinating with others to develop department or regional budgets.
  • Evaluate performance, operations, and financial state by using templates and computer applications; conduct complex financial analyses (operating cash flow, pro forma P&L, line item walk forwards, volume building blocks, NPV, IRR, discounted cash flow, economic analyses) and complete complex variance analyses (volume, P&L lines, cost of goods, rate).
  • Support internal and external audits by assisting with the preparation of audit schedules and review of audit results.
  • Assist field operations by analyzing their operational and financial performance.
  • Support financial statement analysis of business partners (suppliers, customers, co-packers, acquisition targets) using software systems, annual reports, and/or interviews; determine the financial status and assess risk implications.
  • Advise regional or business unit leaders on strategic fiscal matters by preparing regular and special reports on financial and statistical matters to facilitate financial management across the organization; organize regular leadership reviews of financial results.
  • Support strategic financial planning by performing and evaluating financial, utilization, and benchmark analytics.
  • Gather and prepare recommendations for financial plans, potential acquisitions, financial requirements, and operating forecasts; apply financial concepts for planning and control.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, or a related field and a minimum of three years of Financial Planning & Analysis experience, or directly related business experience. Additional equivalent work experience in a related field may be substituted for the degree requirement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of finance experience in a medical center or clinical setting.
  • One year of experience consulting or working directly with clinical health care leadership.
