Job Summary

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Financial Controller ensures the timely and accurate delivery of all accounting outputs and collaborates with other departments to provide essential financial information. This position is based in Dorchester, MA and supports Boys and Girls Clubs of Dorchester, a leading youth development organization that offers programs to foster growth, learning, and leadership among children and teens.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise Accounts Payable and Payroll staff to guarantee payments to vendors and employees are made promptly and accurately.
  • Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycles and related financial reporting.
  • Conduct month-end and year-end closings, including bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, closing journal entries, and posting monthly accruals.
  • Prepare and review accounting journal entries as needed to ensure completeness and accuracy of financial data.
  • Oversee monthly account reconciliations across all systems, including banking, investments, accounts payable, payroll (UKG), membership and program systems (Daxko), and development (Raiser's Edge).
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements, management reports, and variance analyses.
  • Coordinate departmental financial statements and report financial results regularly to the CFO.
  • Assist in coordinating and supervising operating cash flow management, including weekly AP payments.
  • Support the CFO in preparing Board and Finance Committee meetings, including monthly reports, forecasting, and financial presentations.
  • Support the CFO in managing the annual budgeting process.
  • Oversee the Abila MIP accounting system configuration and administration, including assigning and retiring users and creating general ledger accounts.
  • Provide guidance and recommendations to the Chief Financial Officer on issues affecting BGCD.
  • Ensure financial management of grants and timely submission of reports.
  • Assist the CFO with external audit processes and manage relationships with external auditors.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve accounting processes, procedures, and controls.
  • Ensure compliance with current accounting standards and legal requirements.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Support the CFO with ad hoc reporting.
  • Assist with the preparation of reports for all required governmental agencies and the BGCA, managing all transactions, files, and reports to ensure timely completion.
  • Manage and develop accounting staff and cultivate a collaborative, high-performance team environment.
  • Take on special projects as assigned to support financial objectives.

Education and/or Experience

  • Mission-driven professional who wants to be part of an amazing organization.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, with Accounting preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP.
  • Experience in the nonprofit sector including UG audits, UFR reporting, and 990 reporting.
  • Knowledge of banks, banking systems, and cash management.
  • Knowledge of grant accounting and cost allocation methodologies is a plus.
  • Computer skills: Word, advanced Excel, and PowerPoint; Google Workspace (Gmail and Docs).
  • Experience with accounting software, with Abila MIP a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Problem-solving abilities and a proactive, can-do approach to work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Finance department leadership.
