Job Description

Overview

Location: Hybrid remote in Saginaw, Michigan 48601. The Finance Director leads the financial strategy, planning, reporting, and control for the organization. This role collaborates with executive leadership and operations to drive solid financial performance, cost management, and long-term financial sustainability. It also provides financial oversight for the company’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), including valuation coordination, repurchase liability forecasting, and regulatory compliance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic financial leadership to support company growth and operational efficiency.
  • Partner with executive leadership to develop financial strategies and long-term business plans.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support capital investments, equipment purchases, and operational improvements.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and ongoing financial forecasting.
  • Monitor financial performance and provide variance analysis against budgets and forecasts.
  • Develop key financial and operational metrics to support decision making.
  • Oversee cost accounting functions including standard costing, product costing, and cost variance analysis.
  • Work closely with operations to evaluate cost drivers and profitability.
  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Provide and present financial reports and analysis to executive leadership and the board.
  • Ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with GAAP.
  • Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company assets.
  • Partner with the external auditing firm to ensure compliance with financial regulations, tax requirements, and company policies.
  • Oversee banking relationships, credit lines, and financing activities.
  • Oversee audit processes and work with external auditors as needed.
  • Manage cash flow forecasting and working capital.
  • Evaluate capital expenditures and return on investment.
  • Oversee financial aspects of inventory valuation and controls.
  • Partner with operations and supply chain to manage inventory levels and reduce excess or obsolete inventory.
  • Foster collaboration between finance and operational departments.

ESOP Administration and Financial Oversight

  • Partner with executive leadership, ESOP trustees, and third-party administrators to support the ongoing administration of the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
  • Coordinate with the independent valuation firm to provide financial data required for the annual ESOP valuation.
  • Assist in preparing financial projections and documentation used in the ESOP stock valuation process.
  • Monitor and forecast ESOP repurchase liability and assist in developing long-term funding strategies.
  • Ensure accurate accounting and reporting related to ESOP transactions in accordance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee the financial impact of ESOP contributions, share allocations, and distributions.
  • Work with HR and plan administrators to ensure proper recordkeeping and compliance with ERISA and Department of Labor requirements.
  • Support employee education initiatives by helping communicate how company financial performance impacts employee ownership value.
  • Assist leadership in evaluating corporate transactions or strategic decisions that may impact ESOP structure or valuation.
  • Collaborate with legal, tax, and ESOP advisors on compliance, governance, and plan optimization.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Updates and automates accounting systems as necessary.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred
  • 7–10+ years of progressive finance or accounting experience
  • 3–5+ years in a leadership role
  • Experience in manufacturing, food processing, or industrial operations strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of GAAP, cost accounting, fixed asset accounting, and tax filing requirements
  • Advanced MS Excel skills and intermediate MS Office Suite
  • Established ability to lead, develop and manage direct reports
  • Excellent oral, written communication and presentation skills
  • Able to multi-task and use exceptional organizational skills
  • Ability to analyze problems, exercise judgment, make sound objective decisions and implement solutions

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop finance and accounting team members
  • Establish goals, performance expectations, and professional development plans
  • Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations

Provide necessary papers allowing holder to work legally in the United States.

Work Schedule

Hours and days to be determined by the business needs of the organization and are subject to change. Flexible and partial remote work schedules may be approved after 90 days of employment. Occasional travel as needed.
