Job Summary
United Mortgage Corp, a multi-state mortgage banker, is seeking a DE Underwriter to join our rapidly growing organization. This role is based at our Melville, New York Operations Headquarters and offers a hybrid remote work arrangement. Qualified applicants should have 3 to 5 years of underwriting experience, preferably within a mortgage banking environment.
Essential Job Functions
- Underwrite loan files received daily in alignment with Federal Housing Administration (FHA), agency, investor, and credit union policy and procedures.
- Originate and validate FHA insured loans using the HUD FHA Connection system.
- Review and sign off underwriting conditions in accordance with credit union policy while maintaining established turn times.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of state and federal laws and regulations related to credit union compliance, including Bank Secrecy Act and anti money laundering requirements relevant to the position.
- Possess current knowledge of FHA and secondary market requirements regarding credit, income, disclosure, and property, with hands-on experience using agency-related internet and computer-based systems as necessary.
- Analyze tax returns, credit and appraisal reports, fraud indicators, and other income or property documentation to ensure alignment with agency, investor, and credit union requirements.
- Organize and prioritize daily workload to ensure compliance with credit union policy, procedures, and established turnaround times.
- Communicate with vendors, service providers, agencies, investors, staff, brokers, and members as needed.
- Maintain current knowledge of the mortgage industry, credit union standards, and market trends.
- Monitor and address quality control or insurance-related issues on relevant files promptly to prevent delays.
- Collaborate with management to implement procedures that prioritize work within underwriting and processing as volume dictates.
- Work closely with origination and operations staff to ensure adherence to guidelines and policies of the credit union and agency.
Education & Qualifications
- 3 to 5 years of experience as an Underwriter with comprehensive knowledge of the mortgage business.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent work experience.
- Experience with FHA, VA, and Agency loans.
- Direct Endorsement (DE) Required.
- Strong analytical skills, particularly in credit and risk assessment, with solid decision-making abilities.
- Effective interpersonal and technical report writing skills.
- Attention to detail.
