Role overview

Associate Director – Insurance in Fitch Ratings' North American Insurance group delivers credit analysis for insurance companies and their debt instruments in the United States, Canada, and Bermuda. The department includes 18 credit analysts and staff in Chicago and New York and is part of a global insurance team of roughly 70 across North America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Latin America. Coverage spans Life, Property/Casualty, Reinsurance, Health, Mortgage, Title, Captives, Financial Guaranty, and Insurance-Linked Securitizations.

The position is for a Director-level role to provide credit analysis for the North American Insurance Group, focusing on Property/Casualty or Life Insurance in either Chicago or New York. The job title and duties will reflect relevant experience and tenure. As a team member, you will manage a varied portfolio of regulated insurance companies, holding companies, and issuances in the chosen space, as lead or secondary analyst. The envisaged portfolio comprises approximately 10 credits as lead and 4 as secondary. You will monitor company news and financial results to identify events or trends affecting ratings and will hold meetings with senior management of rated entities. You will present and discuss rating recommendations, participate in internal rating committees, and communicate Fitch’s opinions externally. You will contribute to sector commentary and topical research and engage with investors, bankers, and rated insurers. Some travel is required, though currently limited by the pandemic.

What you need to have

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in property/casualty or life insurance analysis, or in strategic planning, financial management, or actuarial roles within the insurance industry. The offer level will reflect experience.
  • CFA, MBA, CPA, or actuarial designations are a plus but not required.
  • Self-motivated professional with strong analytical, quantitative, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects as priorities shift; thrives in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in Excel and Word.
  • Strong candidates with less experience may be considered at varying levels.

Compensation and location

For New York roles, the expected base pay range is $115,000 to $135,000. Actual salaries are determined on an individualized basis and may vary based on education, training, experience, past performance, and other job-related factors. Base pay is part of Fitch’s total compensation package, which may also include commission, discretionary bonuses, long-term incentives, and other benefits.
