Overview
The Credit Underwriting Team Lead is a senior professional role that blends deep specialty knowledge with a solid grasp of industry standards and practices. This position requires a clear understanding of how the underwriting team collaborates with other areas to achieve the objectives of the subfunction and job family. It relies on analytical thinking and familiarity with data analysis tools and methodologies, and involves breaking down information in a structured, communicable way. Developed communication and diplomacy skills are essential for sharing potentially complex or sensitive information. The role carries moderate but direct impact through close involvement with the business’s core activities. The quality and timeliness of services provided influence the effectiveness of the team and related groups.
Responsibilities
- Provide support to the underwriting manager in workflow management, review of underwriting pipeline reports, and escalation handling.
- Conduct daily pipeline reviews to ensure loans are processed within business service level agreements.
- Support training for new hires.
- Underwrite highly complex transactions and remain in production as needed to maintain signing authority.
- Analyze loan scenarios and respond to escalated loan questions with resolutions.
- Evaluate procedures to identify more efficient and cost-effective workflow approaches.
- Serve as the Underwriting Subject Matter Expert for special projects.
- Maintain Daily Control Tracking reports for ARCMs (Activities, Risks, Controls, and Monitoring) and distribute to appropriate channels.
- Adhere to policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal conduct and business practices, and escalate, manage, and report control issues with transparency.
- Perform other duties and functions as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of related experience, including underwriting agency, non-agency, and appraisal review.
- Demonstrated experience as a mentor and leader.
- Strong understanding of complex mortgage transactions and tax return analysis.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Education
- High school diploma.
- Bachelor’s/University degree or equivalent experience preferred.
