Position Overview
The Controller reports to the Director of Finance and leads a team of accountants responsible for the foundation's financial operations. This role encompasses financial reporting, budgeting, audits, general ledger management, internal controls, and daily accounting activities. It emphasizes delivering accurate, timely financial information and supporting strong fiscal stewardship aligned with OCCF's mission.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Directs finance staff, including hiring and conducting performance evaluations, and provides coaching as needed in line with policy.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Financial Reporting and Statements: Lead the preparation of the consolidated statements of financial position and activity, cash flow statements, and other reports reflecting the foundation’s financial position on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis. Oversee financial statements for all supporting organizations, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and GAAP compliance. Analyze financial data, communicate trends and variances, and provide recommendations to leadership. Prepare internal financial reports, statistics, and department-specific reports as needed.
- Accounting Operations: Oversee the general ledger with accurate postings, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial schedules. Review and approve journal entries, interfund gifts/grants, interfund transfers, and other adjustments. Manage accounts payable and related processing to ensure timeliness and accuracy. Lead quarterly general ledger reconciliations, oversee net asset management with proper recording of restricted and non-restricted assets. Monitor daily cash activity for operational needs and provide backup for accounting tasks. Oversee ACH payments.
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Support liquidity, reserve, and cash flow planning. Assist leadership with the annual operating budget, partnering with program and departmental leaders. Compile quarterly departmental budget versus actual reporting, support forecasting efforts, and contribute to long-term financial planning.
- Inventory & Property/Equipment (PPE): Lead inventory and fixed asset management and depreciation. Maintain inventory and PPE schedules with proper documentation and classification. Oversee PPE monitoring, disposition tracking, and schedule maintenance.
- Internal Controls, Audit & Compliance: Maintain a strong internal control framework and drive continuous improvement in accounting processes. Document accounting policies and procedures and perform annual reviews of the policy manual. Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and applicable regulatory requirements. Lead the annual financial statement audit process and serve on the audit liaison team. Oversee audit schedules, samples, and support documentation. Improve systems, workflows, and automation in accounting and reporting. Oversee the preparation and timely filing of Form 1099s and maintain proper documentation. Ensure financial statements and policies adhere to GAAP, FASB, and ASC. Lead the management of accounting policy and procedures, ensuring current and relevant documentation. Provide documentation for tax filings and registration renewals.
- System & Process Improvement: Lead initiatives to enhance accounting systems, automation, workflows, and financial reporting to strengthen effectiveness and efficiency.
- Team Leadership & Development: Supervise, coach, and mentor finance staff, fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture. Conduct performance evaluations and support professional development. Provide training in accounting procedures and internal controls.

Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA preferred.
- Experience: 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in nonprofit settings.
- Proven experience in financial reporting, audits, budgeting, general ledger management, and internal controls.
- Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
- Proficiency with accounting systems (for example QuickBooks) and Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to analyze financial data and prepare meaningful reports.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to lead a finance team with clarity and consistency.
- High integrity, meticulous attention to detail, and commitment to continuous improvement.
- Experience supporting program teams and cross-department collaboration.

- This position is safety sensitive based on the frequent operation of a motor vehicle.
Compensation and Benefits
Pay: $110,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year.
