Overview

A large-scale construction organization is seeking a Controller to lead its accounting and financial reporting functions. Based in Wendell, NC 27591, this role supports operations across multiple offices and states. The Controller will oversee a seasoned accounting team, manage work-in-process (WIP) and percentage-of-completion accounting, and collaborate with leadership to ensure accurate reporting, compliance, and ongoing process improvement. This is a hands-on leadership position best suited for a collaborative, communicative professional who favors thoughtful process evolution over top-down changes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all accounting operations for a multi-location commercial construction business
  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes to ensure timely, consistent completion
  • Direct work-in-process and percentage-of-completion accounting activities
  • Review and finalize financial statements and internal management reports
  • Ensure adherence to GAAP and construction-specific accounting standards
  • Oversee payroll activities in coordination with senior accounting staff, including confidential payroll matters
  • Administer tax-related deadlines and compliance requirements, including benefit-related filings
  • Lead, mentor, and develop an accounting team of roughly 10 to 12 employees through two direct reports
  • Partner with leadership and cross-functional teams to support operations and informed decision-making
  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes, reduce manual tasks, and maximize system capabilities
  • Support reporting and analytics initiatives
  • Occasional travel to other offices, approximately once per month

Team Structure

The Controller manages two direct reports. Each direct report oversees 4 to 5 team members. The team is tenured and stable, with day-to-day operations running effectively.

Systems and Tools

  • Cloud-based construction ERP system
  • Excel (heavy usage, including WIP calculations)
  • Reporting tools such as Crystal Reports
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Time entry system for labor tracking

Qualifications and Experience

  • Prior Controller or senior accounting leadership experience
  • Strong construction accounting background
  • Hands-on experience with work-in-process and percentage-of-completion accounting
  • Experience managing and developing accounting teams
  • Comfort working in Excel-heavy environments
  • Proven ability to meet month-end, year-end, and tax deadlines

Nice to Have

  • Experience with construction-focused ERP systems
  • Exposure to advanced reporting or business intelligence tools
  • Experience improving or automating WIP and reporting processes

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation will be determined based on a broad range of factors including the individual’s skills, experience and training, licensure and certifications, office location, and other business considerations. As required by local law in geographies that require salary range disclosure, the salary range for this role is noted in this job posting.
