Summary
River Bend Food Bank seeks a Chief Financial Officer who reports to the President & CEO. The CFO will steer the organization’s financial operations, serve as a key member of the Executive Team, ensure GAAP-compliant financial reporting, and support strategic decisions that sustain fiscal stability.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Foster strong relationships with hunger-relief partners, staff, volunteers, donors, and the public.
- Serve as a strategic advisor on both short-term and long-range financial planning, objectives, and policy development.
- Oversee financial reporting, forecasting, and analysis of revenue, expenses, and earnings.
- Present quarterly financial reporting, forecasts, and analyses to the Board Treasurer and Finance Committee, and maintain Finance Committee meeting minutes.
- Support the Board Treasurer and the President & CEO by attending Board meetings and addressing financial inquiries as needed.
- Manage cash flow in accordance with cash management and investment policies to optimize returns on short-term and long-term investments.
- Maintain strong internal controls and proper segregation of duties by updating accounting policies, procedures, and manuals to support successful independent audits.
- Lead the Finance Team, ensuring timely reconciliations, accurate reporting, and adherence to organizational standards outlined in the accounting policy and procedural manual.
- Oversee the annual and single audits, coordinate with external auditors, promptly resolve findings, and implement improvements. Partner with tax professionals to prepare and review the 990 filing.
- Lead the annual budgeting process with department leaders and the finance team; ensure budgets are accurately entered in the financial system and presented to the Finance Committee.
- Provide and validate data for Feeding America's compliance requirements through timely and precise submission of all financial reports. Calculate dollars per meal using Feeding America's guidance at least every three years.
- Maintain current knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements in Iowa and Illinois to ensure timely preparation and filing of all financial information.
- Ensure proper recording and tracking of all grants, including lifecycle stewardship, compliance, drawdowns, and reporting to support strategic initiatives.
- Evaluate and recommend insurance coverage to mitigate risk, collaborating with the organization’s insurance brokers.
- Oversee Human Resources policies and benefits, including payroll and employee benefits, to maintain cost-effective plans.
- Manage IT operations in collaboration with third-party providers; supervise equipment inventory, approve purchases, and ensure compliance with cybersecurity training.
- Review vendor contracts with the CEO to ensure alignment with River Bend Food Bank’s intent and identify cost-saving opportunities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting with at least 10 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- CPA certification or a Master’s in accounting strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word) and accounting software; ability to learn new systems used in food banking.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to present information effectively to staff, Board members, and the public.
- Capacity to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Detail-oriented with strong typing and data-entry skills.
- Commitment to the mission of ending hunger.
- Valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record.
- Successful completion of background check, credit check, and drug screening.
